Happy Holidays!

Happy holidays friends!

We are staying in Freiburg this year for Christmas, celebrating a quiet holiday season and enjoying the new sights and traditions in Germany. The end of 2014 has been busy, mostly on Charles' end, but that means that my parenting duties have doubled. Things with our little family are good however; Edwin is really starting to feel settled in his kindergarten, and we are starting to find our new rhythm, ie, time for me to do some work. I've got some projects milling about in my mind and I'm eager to hit the ground running in 2015 and really carve out some me/work time.

Life in Germany has been wonderful so far, but also presented us with challenges. Thank you for your patience with English Muffin, and for your continued support.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

It's the last day before the Christmas holidays and the office is looking pretty empty... well, I guess it always looks pretty empty, but I'm feeling the emptiness. Gone are my buddies the tight deadlines and stacks of paper, hum of the printer and crackle of cello sleeves. Instead, there is the twiddling of thumbs and buzzing coming from my head as I begin to plot the coming year for English Muffin. It's nice (and necessary) to have some downtime, but it is also a little boring. Good thing it's Eddie's last day at daycare and Charles' at work! Time to pack the car, hit the road and begin the nuttiness that is the Christmas holidays, Callard-Nock style.

From our family to yours, we wish you the happiest of holidays! See you in 2014!

JUST FOR ME

Photo: Eugénie Bee Jewelry
After a month and a half of being in perpetual holiday show mode, I did something I rarely do in the final minutes of the final day of my last holiday show, I made an impulse purchase. For those of you who know me, you know that I don't wear very much jewellery—well almost none except my wedding ring—so this impulse purchase was especially impulsive, however I have zero regrets. I bought myself a beautiful rose gold bow bracelet from the Eugénie Bee Jewelry collection. The lovely and talented Clotilde handcrafts timeless and elegant pieces, and when I saw the Prescott Bracelet in person I knew I had to have it! So, now I am the lucky girl with the rose gold bow bracelet. C'est jolie, non?!

LA PRESSE

If you live in Montreal and get the newspaper on the weekend, then there's a chance you saw me in Saturday's La Presse. I contributed some thoughts to an article on the DIY movement, and a step by step guide to create your own traditional Finnish holiday ornament, himmeli. It doesn't seem that the article is on the web, or I would have added the link here for you to check out :) Instead, I've attached the English version of the DIY text below incase you'd like to give it a go!

Himmeli is a traditional Finnish decoration made from natural rye straw and string. It is generally suspended from the ceiling like a mobile during Christmas time. The beautiful and delicate structures can be elaborated upon to create complex geometric shapes.

Since finding the natural rye straw outside of Scandinavia can be difficult I am going to use paper drinking straws that are available here in Montreal (Omer de Serres) and artistic wire (Omer de Serres). Once you have mastered the basic shape feel free to get creative and see how simple or complex you want to make your himmeli.

Materials:

• Plastic or paper drinking straws
• Artistic wire (28 Gauge)
• Scissors
• Ruler
• Pencil
• Wooden beads (optional)

Instructions:

1. Cut your straw into twelve 5 cm pieces. My straws measure 19.5 cm, so I cut three straws into 4 pieces each just short of 5 cm.

2. Cut 1 m of wire.

3. String 4 pieces of straw onto the end of your wire.

4. Secure them by twisting the end of the wire to the working part of the wire. You should have a closed square shape.

5. String 2 more pieces of straw onto your wire.

6. Secure them to the opposite end of the square.

7. String 2 more pieces of straw onto your wire.

8. Secure them to the opposite end of the square (the place where you first tied off the original 4 pieces).

9. Now feed the wire through one of the straw pieces so it comes out in the middle of your himmeli.

10. String 1 piece of straw onto your wire and secure it to the middle of the next segment.

11. Repeat.

12. Repeat.

13. String the final piece of straw and fasten it to the middle of the final segment. String on a wooden bead, or two or three, and loop the end of the wire tucking the excess into the hole of the beads. Hang your himmeli on your Christmas tree, or to create a garland, use string to join your himmeli together, you can make as many as you wish and in differing sizes.

It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it, here's a video that provides some good visuals:

Roasting Chestnuts

Roasting Chestnuts
Roasting Chestnuts

In the wintertime we love to stop by the chestnut man's hut and buy a few warm and tasty treats. So, over the Christmas holidays we decided to try to make our very own roasted chestnuts at home. It's so simple and they taste almost as good as the ones from the vendors - they have the special roasting pans, what can I say?! If you're looking for a warm and delicious winter treat I would definitely suggest giving these a try.

Happy Wednesday!

Chrismas Eve in Vienna

Christmas Eve in Europe is basically equal to Christmas morning in North America. Big Chuck and I discovered this when we went looking for a glass of punsch on Christmas eve. We didn't find any Christmas Markets open but instead enjoyed strolling through an almost eerily quiet city. Charlie is a maverick at shooting at night, he tries to teach me about adjusting the settings but my lack of patience prevents me from really learning anything of value ;) thank goodness I have him to record some of our memories.

Christmas Thank You's

Custom Thank You Printable

I know the big day hasn't arrived yet but I've been working on a post-Christmas project, a Custom Thank You Note and Card Printable. The kids featured on the cards are completely customizable, you can choose hair, skin and clothing colour as well as choose from 3 different hair styles for the girls. Wouldn't this be a really fun activity to do with some kids (yours or a friend's) over the holidays, and just think of how happy Grandma and Grandpa would be to get one of these handwritten notes from the grand-kids!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

marimekko present

Look what came in the mail yesterday! I was so excited when the postman handed me this Marimekko print shipping box. Of course it came from my aunt, uncle and cousin in Finland. Can't wait to open it, but we'll do our best to hold off until Christmas morning.

And guess what else?! It's snowing!! Yay, Christmas is coming to Vienna too. Now, it's not snowing in the way that you are probably imagining - big fluffy flakes that require snow boots and shovels to conquer, no... so far there might be about 1 mm of snow accumulation in some areas, and these are some tiny little flakes, but at least it's something.

Have a warm Wednesday :)

Krampus and Nikolaus

Long before Santa Claus, there was Saint Nikolaus and his evil counterpart, Krampus! This past weekend in Austria, children were visited from both of these Christmas figures bringing with them either gifts of goodies and toys or presents meant to punish naughty children. My friend Mark bought these Zwetschken Krampus dolls (made from prunes) for his little girls - how scared would you be to wake up on Saturday morning to find these guys staring at you from the breakfast table? Yikes!

I should mention that these little girls got much more that a couple of stinky Krampuses, the next morning Nikolaus brought lots of toys.
Thanks for the photo Mark :)

Happy Monday everyone,

How about some mini trees, a lovely table arrangement for Christmas Day dinner.

Christmas Tree
Move your traditional tree to from the living room to the kitchen, that way you can admire it while you bake your Christmas treats.

The countdown begins!

Well, it's official, only 1 month left till Christmas! I was looking through my Etsy Favourites and discovered I've been "hearting" a lot of holiday decorations lately. Here are a few of my faves...

Hand Printed Moleskin Journal - Cardinal

I'm not sure if we'll get a Christmas tree this year or not. We got one last year, our very first as a couple, and it was beautiful and festive and fun. I love having Christmas lights around the house and a few holiday decorations courtesy of Ikea. I wish I could buy some fun things from Etsy, but as we are leaving Vienna soon, it's probably not the best time to start accumulating holiday decor. So for now, i'll just decorate my blog ;)

Happy 1 month till Christmas day!

Well it's official, Big Chuck is 30!! We had a great weekend celebrating. Here are few late night photos from Friday's celebration.

Oh Tannenbaum

Big Chuck and I got our Christmas tree on Saturday, a lovely blue spruce that stands about 8 feet high! Since we will both be in Vienna this year over the holidays we thought it would be fun to try to do a little festive decorating around the flat. Above you can see a little ornament I made out of some branches from the tree and some twine.

The tree really has made it feel more Christmas-y, and the smell takes me back to my childhood when we would always have a real tree at Christmas. We have both remarked that the tree is so lovely on it's own we don't even know if it needs any decorations. We'll see...
