Montreal, Week 1

montreal

It's been 1 week since I arrived in Montreal and think all in all it's been a good one. It was really nice to have my sister and her boyfriend here for the first couple days. It's always best to break in a new transit system with friends!

The apartment hunt, although a little rough at times is going well. I think we're pretty close to getting a place - although I don't want to jinx it so that's all I'll say.

Montreal has been music to my ears. Ever day a little more German gets replaced by French (yipee!). Although, I have been accidentally combining the two languages - not good, people look at me like I'm crazy! While I'm here on a specific mission, it's also been a nice mini-vacation. I've been getting to know my new city and am really excited to explore even more once Big Chuck and Tyke arrive. I'm saving all the good bits for them.

I haven't been taking many photos with my "real" camera. I find the iPhone just so much handier, although the quality of the pictures isn't the greatest, but they do have a certain charm about them, non?!

Have a great weekend :)

Auf wiedersehen!

VW

I'm just popping by to say hi and to take a little break from all the packing. I really don't know how I thought I was going to fit everything (clothes, shoes, papers, books, artwork, toiletries, bags, and Tyke's food) into 2 suitcases. I may have been dreaming yesterday when I took a look at all of my stuff, and a look at both of my suitcases and thought, "no problem!". Problem, big problem. I guess I'll have to continue the clothing purge.

Needless to say, I have no musical selection for you today, and probably won't be around much tomorrow or Wednesday... hummm, this week might be pretty quiet here on the English Muffin blog as I settle into my new/old life. But please check back on Thursday, hopefully I'll have some fun new things to share with you then.

Happy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday!

Time Travel

photo: sundevilstormin via flickr
I had this idea, to give you some tips on enduring those long haul flights but as I write this, I'm realizing that I no longer remember how to type or punctuate a sentence. Up until about 5 minutes ago I was marveling at how well I managed to jump through time zones, usually I feel just awful. I find traveling from North America to Europe is much more difficult than going the other way. So, here are a few of my tips and tricks for overcoming jet lag.

• drink water!! I used to focus my hydration efforts mainly on the time I was actually on the plane, but this can lead to many bathroom trips, and if you're in the middle of two sleeping people a tricky situation at best. This time I started drinking lots of water as soon as I woke up on the morning of my flight. This way I wasn't starting my flight already slightly dehydrated and could maintain my hydration with a few glasses of water and sipping from my water bottle.

• try to sleep. I think this is important, especially on overnight flights. Some people are adamant about not sleeping at all, but for me, even though sleeping on an airplane can be painfully uncomfortable and often interrupted, it's much better than no sleep at all. I need an hour or two of shut eye to be able to make it off the plane the next morning and to my final destination. If you have trouble sleeping on planes I recommend listening to your iPod to drown out the crying babies, wearing a sleeping mask and making good use of the headrest, pillow and blanket. I once sat next to this guy who put the blanket over his head like he was a ghost and didn't move for the whole flight, my hero!

• airplane food, hummm. I flew with Austrian Airlines this time, and they always have "good" food. By "good" I mean that it's probably as good as you're going to get thousands of meters above the earth. That being said though, it's rare to get fresh veggies or fruit. Most of what we are fed is dairy, wheat and meat - all difficult things to digest. Is it just me or do gasses expand at higher altitudes?? I armed myself with two homemade sandwiches loaded with veggies and a big bag of grapes. That way I could pick at my meals and avoid the stuff I know doesn't sit well with me. Happy tummy = happy Bess.

• today's like any other day. The best advice I can give is to forget about the last time zone you were in. I used to love to play the game, "it's actually 3 am my time!". The novelty eventually wears off and you realize quickly that you're not doing yourself any favours. Treat the day you arrive at your new destination like any other. Align your mealtimes and activities to those of the people around you. Try to stay up as long as you can, saying no to napping will go a long way to helping you adjust to your new time zone.

So far so good, although the couch is definitely calling my name! Let's see... it's actually 6:44 am Toronto time...
Let me know if you have any more tips for long flights - I'd love to use them.

See you tomorrow,
bess

Bye Bye Birdie...

I woke up with the song "Bye Bye Birdie" in my head this morning, which is actually kind of appropriate since I'm flying back to Vienna today. If you've been watching Mad Men, like my mom and I have been (excessively), then you'll know what I'm talking about - and if you haven't, what are you waiting for? It's well written and staring wonderful actors, but the real treat are all those vintage set pieces and costumes, 1960's admen, need I say more?!

"Bye bye Toronto, I'm gonna miss you so!"

See you back in Vienna,

I was up at the crack of dawn this morning to catch a flight to home sweet home, Toronto. I just got in and tidied up and am now going to treat myself to a little Oprah!

Finland Pt. 2 - In the forest

Welcome to Finland's forest! One of my favourite parts of being in Finland is visiting the cottage. It is in a little town on the Baltic Sea called Merikarvia. Big Chuck and I stayed in the little cottage that my grandparents built. We had such a marvelous time, I hope you enjoy the photos.

Our little cottage. From the small window on the left hand side you can see right to the sea from the sauna, ummm, heaven?!

See you tomorrow for some Muffinettes :)

It's all about the journey

Airplane, flickr

Big Chuck arrived home safe and sound on Friday night. We (Tyke and I) met him at the airport, just like I said I would. I even tried to cook him dinner, alas he took over - not that I minded ;)
And just like that, he's off again, this time to Germany but only for the week. Once he gets back we have a couple days in Vienna and then we're off (together this time) to Finland to visit my family. I'm so excited about this trip. Salmon, sauna and the sea, need I say more? Then in September, the last Vienna - Toronto trip to see my friends and family before we leave Austria for good next Spring. I feel slightly overwhelmed with all this travel (as does my bank account) but it is also exhilarating to experience the world this way. Both Big Chuck and I love traveling and immersing ourselves in new places, tastes, music and art. I feel really lucky that we have the freedom and means to live like this (at least for now!).

Back tomorrow with Canadiana Tuesday. Have a great day!

Postcards from Panama - week 2

Big Chuck sent home another batch of photos from his adventures in Panama. I love seeing his pictures, he's such a talented Jr. photographer! I have a few more details about what we're seeing than last week, but I'm sad to say that we're still only communicating via google chat. How did anyone survive in long distance relationships before the invention of Skype?!

The pharmacy in Panama City

One of the scientists at the research centre is working with fruit bats. This little guy/gal eats figs. Don't worry they are caught and then released :)

Palacio de las Garzas, or Heron's Palace, is the residence of the President of Panama. The herons roam the courtyard freely. How nice...

Thanks Big Chuck!

Postcards from Panama

Well, they took a little while to get here, but Big Chuck's postcards from Panama have finally arrived! To be honest we have yet to speak in person, only over Google chat, so I'm not too sure what it is exactly we're looking at - except for the buses, I got a brief explanation about those!

A church in Panama City

Public Transit! Apparently this is one of the city's public buses, cool, eh?! We'll have to ask for more info...

Ooooo, scary spider!
