Baby Wants

What is it about babies and quilts? Maybe it's the first of many steps in the nesting process, wanting to surround yourself and your little one with beautiful things made with love. All I know is that now that we're planning for the arrival of our little boy I really want to make him his own special quilt. The only problem is that I've never made a quilt in my life. I have a sewing machine and I can definitely sew straight lines, but I have no idea how hard a quilt would be to make. Has anyone ever attempted such a project? How did it turn out? Any leads on super simple quilting patterns? How long would it take to make?

Here are some quilts I love...

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend,
xo Bess

Ps. If any of you are stellar quilt makers and would like to trade some artwork (prints, calendars, custom work) for a pretty baby quilt, I'd definitely be interested :)

  1. Hey Bess,

Its Carla, Courtney's friend in Parry Sound. I'm a big time quilter... we should chat. Take a look around my blog and tell me what you think!

  2. Ooh, I love the quilts you picked out! Gorgeous colours! I totally agree that quilting and nesting go hand in hand. When I was expecting my 1st baby, I had an incredible urge to sew him a quilt too. Like you, I had never sewn a quilt before and really had no clue how to do it. I bought a jelly roll pack from a local quilt shop and just cut and sewed and mangled my way through it. 4 years later it's starting to fall apart, but I still love it! and it makes me happy to look at it! Sooo, my advice is to just go forth and create something! Even if it's not perfect, it'll be beautiful and keep your little guy warm and happy :) Good luck!

Btw, there's a sweet, simple little charm square baby quilt pattern over at Elizabeth Hartman's http://www.ohfransson.com/files/charm-squares-baby-quilt.pdf

  3. I still have my baby quilt--I'm literally touching it right now (it's on the back of my office chair). I have NO quilting resources, but just wanted to encourage you! :)

  4. Why don't you make one! It is not that difficult if you make something simple like squares and I could help you. Just a suggestion :) Have a great weekend xox

  5. I had the same urge! Can't operate a sewing machine at all, though, so it went unfulfilled.

  6. Hi Bess!!

I've made quilts and I am a pretty débutant sewer. Its pretty much just straight lines! I'd recommand to use only squares, and also similar types of fabric. (i used old shirts from my dad)
Id say the trickiest part is making the top stitches that hold the layers together, but i used a machine for that two, not hand stitches.

    ;)
