Lead sled to green machine

Happy Friday everyone,

This week I'd like to share with you a some pics from an article I recently read in the NY times. Neil Young, a fellow Canadian and perhaps one of my favorite artists, is building a "green" Cadillac.

Looks like a real beauty. You can read the whole story with lots of details here. Perhaps in the future we may see Neil challenging the new hybrid Cadillac SUV to a drag race?

As the holidays get closer, I start to stray from my mostly healthy diet and gravitate towards the sweeter food groups, namely; cakes, cookies, cupcakes and pies. Am I alone on this quest? I think not. So today, rather than buying a schokolade croissant from the bakery (there are soooo many here) I thought I would indulge my senses instead with these beautiful confections from some of my favourite online bakeries and blogs.

Careful, you're drooling...

Les Champignons

(illustrations from the Nouvel Atlas des Champignons)

On Sunday, Big Chuck and I went to the Universität für Bodenkulture's library here in Vienna. There were so many beautiful books from the late 1800's to present day, and I found some really beautiful botanical illustrations. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet, but I'm sure they will inspire some sort of project in the future. For now I thought I'd share the some of the champignon collection I amassed.

Hope you enjoy them...

Flipbook Friday

KRAAK AND SMAAK squeeze me from FunkySpaceMonkey on Vimeo.

Unfortunately, our regular Freestylin' Friday blogger had other duties to attend to, so, in his stead I am going to try to come up with some Friday worthy content.

Dutch band Kraak and Smaak, made this flipbook for the music video to their song, Squeeze Me. It's so cool that even Kanye West has been blogging about it. Check it out, the song's pretty catchy too!

Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!

(photo from Carolyn Fay)

Happy Beaujolais (Bo-jo-lay) Nouveau (Nu-vo) Day! Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrive! (The New Beaujolais Wine has arrived!)

Beaujolais Nouveau Day lands on the third Thursday of November (today!) and is the day when wine makers from the Beaujolais region of France release their wine. Beaujolais wine is made from Gamay grapes and undergoes a special winemaking process called cabonic maceration. This process prevents the extraction of tannins from the grape skins, which has the side effect of making this an approachable, easy-drinking red wine.

(photo from The Pittsburg Post-Gazette)

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is not so much tradition as it is marketing tactic, but yet, one can't help but get excited to see what is available from this year's harvest... especially as it is an excuse to get together with your family and friends and have a smooth glass of red wine!

(photo from The Daily Mail)

As a rule of thumb, a Beaujolais Nouveau should be drunk by the New Year. This wine is not one you age in the cellar -- which is fine as far as I am concerned!

You're invited...

Be sure to swing by tomorrow to read new English Muffin guest blogger Nina's first post as our resident Guerilla Gourmand. After tirelessly trying to educate me on the wonderful world of wine, I have successfully convinced her that we would all be better people if only she would share her wisdom and love of the noble grape with English Muffin readers. So, bring your palate and a pen, and find out tomorrow what wine you should be serving this weekend!

Who said English Muffin wasn't classy?!

I love surprises!

(photo from Bloesem Kids)

Yay! English Muffin's Animal Alphabet poster was featured on the Bloesem Kids pinboard on DaWanda this week. I am such a fan of Irene's blogs, Bloesem and Bloesem Kids (B:Kids) and so delighted that she found my work on DaWanda and decided to feature it.

Here's the link the the B:Kids pinboard on DaWanda where you can check out all the other fabulous artists and designers who were featured.

Thanks again B:Kids!

Coat Check!

(photos from coatcheck)

Raccoon, beaver, mink, fox - you name it, these ladies have reclaimed it! As their motto clearly states, "History has checked its fur coat, and we are The Coat Check girls" they balance their love of fur's warm and luxurious qualities with the humanitarian side and reclaim, clean and make anew generations of discarded fur coats. Coatcheck is based in Vancouver and sells their pillows, throws, scarves and even a novelty item or two through their Etsy shop. You can also visit their shop to read more about their sustainable process and philosophy regarding fur.

Can you even imagine how warm you'd be under the "Nordic Flying Carpet" blanket?!
thank you animals...

Muffin Mondays!

We had a wonderful morning at the market on Saturday, complete with breakfast, friends, barrels and barrels of delicious apples and even a little romance ;)

Simple and scrumptious, these apples muffins are quick and easy to make. With most ingredients available at your finger tips you can whip-up a healthy breakfast treat anytime.

Apple Muffins

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups chopped apples

Grease a 12 cup muffin pan.

In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

In a large bowl, beat together butter, sugar and eggs until smooth. Mix in vanilla. Stir in apples, and gradually blend in the flour mixture. Spoon the mixture into the prepared muffin pan.

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Allow to sit 5 minutes before removing muffins from pan.

Enjoy!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Records!

Hey everybody, happy Friday.

This week my post focuses on two of the three R's - records and recycling. Check out some of the goods made, or re-purposed as they like to put it, by Vinylux.

Album cover sketchbooks

From Vinylux's website...

"Vinylux products are created from recycled vintage record albums that are transformed into a variety of new designs. The original record labels are intact and represent some of the most popular music ever put on vinyl. We work with LPs, 45s, and vintage album covers to create personal, unique gifts that bring vinyl records back into your home. We can even use your own records to create the products specifically for you. All of our items are made in the spirit of re-purposing. We try to re-use, re-present, re-cycle, and re-imagine the materials that go into our products."

Just don't try to melt your own records into tableware (unless they belong to your ex that is ;)

Bow wow!

(Photos from pillowpillowpillow.com)

Even better than the real thing! No walks in the pouring rain, no poop scooping, no vet bills, no couches covered in fur, no smelly kisses, no wagging tails, no endless love and adoration, no... no wait - it isn't better than the real thing after all - but a close second... I'd love one of these Pillow Pillow Pillow pillows designed by Aaron Stewart that looks just like Tyke!

ps. You can enter your furry friend in their "model search" contest, who knows maybe Tyke will be the next face of Pillow Pillow Pillow!

Rubitone

(photo from Ignacio Pilotto)

Here's a little colour to brighten up this grey day...

I first saw the Rubitone on Design Spotter's website and thought what a great idea! Unfortunately it is not sold commercially, but that doesn't mean you can't craft one for yourself.
